Week 1 Offense Fails: NFL’s Biggest Flops 🚫🏈

Scoreless Games, Misfires, and Letdowns: The Most Disappointing Offensive Performances of the Season Opener 📉

The Worst Offenses from Week 1 👎

Three teams didn’t score a touchdown on offense in week one and yet two of them were still able to come away with the win. These offenses led by the leagues #1 overall pick, a quarterback worth $180M, and top receiving talent and they still weren’t able to make anything happen on offense. Using nothing but statistics to back these opinions on week one’s worst offenses.

The strategy behind making the selections is simply which teams did or didn’t move the ball down the field. Along with a teams ability to put the ball in the end zone. If they didn’t score — you can bet they’ll make this list. These teams were barely able to move the ball play-to-play even though some of them were passing majority of the time.

Here’s the list 🔽

#5 Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers were one of the three teams to not have an offensive touchdown in their opening game. Somehow, they were still able to win the game. However, they were able to put Boswell in kicking range multiple times in this game which keeps them at the bottom of this list. A team that can’t score a touchdown in the week has to make the list regardless of gaining yards or not.

#4 Atlanta Falcons

Given Atlanta just signed Kirk Cousins to a $180M and have the 8th overall draft pick from last season in their backfield you would think the offense would be able to produce. However, losing to a team that didn’t score a single touchdown would indicate that the offense wasn’t firing on either side. Atlanta posted the 4th fewest yards of the week and connected on only one touchdown. Passing on 45% of their plays and only getting around 4.5 yards per play earns the Falcons a spot for one of the worst offenses of Week 1.

#3 Carolina Panthers

How about a pick to start off your 2024 offensive season? That’s what Bryce Young did and eventually gave the ball away a second time in the game. The Panthers averaged a mere 2.9 yards per carry on the ground with a week low of 58 rushing yards in total — a total that JK Dobbins beat in just one rush. Their total offense was the second fewest air under 200 yards but they were able to score at least one touchdown.

#2 New York Giants

Another $100M quarterback led offense makes the list. This time, Daniel Jones also joins Young as one of the few QB’s to throw multiple interceptions in the opening week of football. The Giants also scored no touchdowns on the day and only managed two field goals for a league low of just 6 points in their opening game. With a top-10 wide receiver, Jones failed to target him more than 5 times on his 47 pass attempts that took up 69% of New York’s offensive plays that only accounted for about 3.5 yards per.

#1 Chicago Bears

Despite drafting two offensive weapons inside the top 10 of this years NFL draft, including the #1 overall pick — the Bears had under 100 total passing yards and accumulated a league-low of just 148 total yards at about 2.9 yards per play. Passing plays barely broke the 2 yard mark on average for an offensive that is spending over $103.2M in total cash to offensive players.

Let me know if you think there was an offense that played worse than any of these teams in the first week of NFL.
